Many people think that roses are hard to keep or that you need to have a special garden just for roses, yet they can be easy to grow and beautifully incorporated into shrub or perennial borders. Here are some varieties that are low maintenance that will fit well into your landscape.

Disease Resistant Roses

Knockout - A high performance shrub rose with magenta-red flowers that bloom all season long. This rose is nearly completely resistant to black spot and has excellent resistance to other foliage fungal disease. The dark glossy blue-green foliage is reportedly distasteful to Japanese Beetles. Zone 4-10.

The Fairy - Polyantha type rose with small ruffled light pink flowers which bloom just about all summer. Blends well in a shrub or perennial border. A low maintenance and disease resistant rose. Zone 4-10.

Carefree Sunshine – A sister variety of Knock Out yet with yellow flowers. Unlike most yellow roses this one has excellent resistance to black spot. Zone 4-10.

Sea Foam - A shrub rose with double white flowers and a delicate fragrance. Zone 5-10.

Ingrid Bergman – A hybrid tea rose with dark red large blossoms on long straight stems.

Showbiz – A floribunda with sprays of long lasting scarlet blooms. Zone 5-10.

Iceberg – A floribunda with white flowers. Has a slight honey scent. Vigorous and hardy they will bloom all summer. Grows 3 to 4 feet. Zone 5-10.

Playboy - A floribunda with orange-pink-apricot blossoms with bright yellow eyes. Very striking. Grows 4 to 5 feet. Zone 5-9.

Hot Cocoa – A floribunda with a smoky chocolate red color. Rounded and bushy growth habit with excellent disease resistance. Grows 3 to 4 feet tall.

Eureka – A floribunda with an apricot copper color. Excellent disease resistance with an upright spreading habit. Grows 3 ½’.

Carefree Beauty – A pink flowering shrub rose that is disease resistant and very winter hardy. Considered to be tailored to Northern gardens. Blooms nearly non-stop all season.

Honey Perfume - The prettiest floribunda with perfectly ruffled petals of an apricot yellow color. Resistant to rust and powdery mildew. Blooms from spring to autumn, nice delicate spicy scent. Has a medium height, bushy habit.

Chicago Peace – Disease resistant leathery foliage with a classic Hybrid tea long stem rose of a coppery pink bloom. Continues to bloom in hot weather and is winter hardy. A sport of the famous Peace rose that was discovered in Chicago.

Roses for Part Shade

Abraham Darby - An old fashioned shrub rose with very fragrant blooms of orange-pink. Grows 4 to 6 feet. Zone 4-9.

Angel Face - A floribunda rose with ruffled mauve blossoms that have a sweet citrus scent. They bloom all season. Grows 2 to 3 feet tall and wide. Zone 5-9.

Golden Celebration - An old fashioned looking shrub rose with deep yellow flowers, 70 to 80 petal count. Has a classic old rose fragrance.

New Dawn - A climber with blush pink flowers born in clusters. Has a sweet rose scent. Grows 15-20 feet. Zone 4-10.

Cecile Brunner - A climbing polyantha rose with large, airy clusters of pale pink flowers. Grows 10 to 20 feet tall. Zones 6-9.

Playboy - A floribunda with orange-pink-apricot blossoms with bright yellow eyes. Very striking. Grows 4 to 5 feet. Zone 5-9.

Sally Holmes – A shrub rose with small single white blossoms in huge rounded clusters. Grows 6 to 12 feet. Zone 4-10.

Ballerina - A hybrid musk rose with pink flowers with white eyes. Graceful in stature with an abundance of small single blooms. Grows 3 feet. Zone 4-10.

Ground Cover Roses

White Meidland – Double white flowers. Grows 1 to 2 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide.

Electric Blanket – Coral-pink flowers with 25 to 30 petal count bloom in many small clusters. The repeat bloom is very fast. Spread 3 feet. Zone 4 -10.

Starry Night – Nearly always in bloom with single white flowers and golden stamens. Slightly fragrant. Zone 4-10.

Flower Carpet Series – Coral, Appleblossom, Yellow, Pink, Coral – Naturally resistant to powdery mildew and black spot and available in many colors. Blooms continuously from spring to fall. Grows 2 feet tall by 3 feet wide.

Carefree Marvel – A disease resistant ground cover rose with bright pink flowers. Has a moderate spicy scent with a 25-50 petal count. Blooms from spring to fall. Very winter hardy.

Roses For Hedges

Bonica – A shrub rose with pink blossom of a 40+ petal count. Blooms in small clusters all season long. Grows 3 to 4 feet high. Zone 4-10.

F.J. Grootendorst – Hybrid rugosa rose with dark red blooms. Extremely hardy, disease resistant and vigorous in growth. Blossom id double and has a deeply cut ruffle, it resembles Dianthus. Zone 3-9.

Betty Boop – A floribunda with single blooms that have a yellow center and white petals with bright cherry pink edging. A consistent rebloomer with a moderate fruity fragrance. Grows 3 to 5 feet tall. Plant 2 to three feet apart. Zone 5-10.

Betty Prior – A floribunda with a bright pink single blooms. Vigorous and disease resistant. Blooms non-stop all season long. Grows 4 to 6 feet tall. Zone 4-9.

Iceberg – White flowers. Grows 3 to 4 feet. Zone 5-10.

Climbing Roses of Interest

Garden Sun – A disease resistant yellow climber with large 35-40 petal count blooms. These flower on new wood and on older mature canes. Blooms freely all season long. Grows 10 to 12 feet tall.

New Dawn – A disease resistant blush pink rose that has a heavy bloom in spring with a sweet rose fragrance. Very winter hardy, they can die down to the ground in a hard winter and sprout right back up to half their full height in one season. Best on arbors and pergolas. Grows 18 to 20 feet tall. Zone 4-10.

Fourth of July – A disease resistant rambler with unique flowers that are red and white stripped. Best for covering a large wall, and arbor or a pergola. A repeat bloomer, that seems to be in flower all season long. Grows 15 to 20 feet. Zone 5-10.

Collette – A disease resistant old-fashioned looking blossom in light pink with a heavy damask scent.

Red Roses of Interest

Crimson Bouquet – A grandiflora rose with even toned deep red blossoms without a blush or darker markings. The bright glossy foliage remains very healthy. Has an upright growth to four to five feet. Zone 5-10.

Veteran’s Honor – A hybrid tea rose with beautiful 25 to 30 petal count spiral. The red color holds well without fading in hot sunny weather. This rose also withstands rain showers without blemished blossoms.

Europeana – A floribunda with abundant dark-red double blooms. Long lasting blooms that perform well in the heat. Medium height with rounded habit.
