The cyclamen purchased around Christmas are the florist variety which have been grown in a greenhouse and can be enjoyed through the holidays. With proper care they can be enjoyed long after the holiday. When the blooms have died back and the foliage has turned yellow, cut it back. Put the plant in a cool, dark location for the summer keeping it watered just enough so that the roots do not dry out. In the fall, bring the plant out and set it in an area where it will get bright light. Water about once a week or when it feels dry and fertilize monthly. If the leaves start to wilt, that means it is to dry. If you see any grey fuzz either in the soil or on the leaves, it is over-watered and depending how bad the problem is, it may need to be disposed of. Cutting off old spent leaves and flowers will help air circulation and prevent this fungus (botrytis) from happening.
