BITTERSWEET
Bittersweet
Celastrus scandens
American bittersweet is a deciduous, perennial vine. Bittersweet is easy to grow, with showy color of yellow seedpods and orange berries in the fall. Many people like to use Bittersweet as a decoration in a vase, wreath or in floral arranging. This vine adds beauty to your garden all year long. It will grow over fences, on a trellis, or climb on trees. These vines have small greenish-white flowers in June and in early fall, then once the orange/yellow seed pods peel away they reveal a scarlet red colored fruit. Bittersweet fruit is not safe for human consumption, but when left on the vine they provide food for birds and other small animals for the winter. Bittersweet will grow in full sun or shade.
